New Site Added to the Bird Route

Braulio Carrillo National Park protects 113 acres of habitat, mainly highland rainforest and cloud forest.  There are two sectors available for public visitation: Barva Volcano and Quebrada González.

Quebrada Gonzalez has been added to the Bird Route for its proximity to this national park, only 26 miles from the capital city of San Jose, and on a primary highway, easily accessible by public and private transportation.

There is approximately three miles of trail available on three different trails at Quebrada Gonzalez, all in good condition. Visitors birding is a common site at Quebrada Gonzalez as an astounding 550 species of birds have been reported here, which is 64% of all birds known to occur in Costa Rica! Some of the birds that have been noted here are the Three Wattled Bell Bird, Black Solitaire and the Quetzal.

A ceremony is being planned for November of 2009 to officially welcome the site as part of the Costa Rican Bird Route project. Please check back to this website for tours that take you to this amazing new site!
