This is the only multi-day trip in the country that focuses on observing, photographing and learning about the Great Green Macaw. As a highly endangered flagship species, the Great Green Macaw is the pioneer of a conservation legacy still unfolding in one of the world's most biologically rich places, Costa Rica.
The sites visited on this tour are subject to change; based on where we expect the Great Green Macaw to be found at the time of year you will be visiting. During the breeding season, the macaws will be found further north, preparing their nests. During the feeding season, the macaws will be located further south.
- Multiple opportunities to learn about and search for the Great Green Macaw
- Excellent interpretation on this one-of-a-kind tour
- Campfire talk where you hear local stories, and even eat cooked seeds of the Almendro tree
- Great general birding and wildlife opportunities
Day 1 .......... Tirimbina
Travel to Tirimbina Rainforest Center and be introduced to this site. Listen to a presentation on the Great Green Macaw, and learn about why this bird has come to be so imperiled. Eat a hearty lunch and spend the afternoon on the trails and suspension bridges of Tirimbina searching for not only the Macaw, but also the Sunbittern, White-fronted Nunbird, and the Royal Flycatcher – all emblematic species of the site. Have dinner and afterward view the feature film: Almendro: Tree of Life.
Day 2 .......... Mi Pedacito de Cielo
Head north, searching for the Lapa Verde on the way to the site of Mi Pedacito de Cielo, which translates to “my little piece of heaven.” Spend the afternoon birding the expansive reserve of Mi Pedacito, then enjoy a sumptuous homemade feast prepared by the owner Marco Tulio and his family. Enjoy the night sounds while reviewing the bird list before heading to bed. Overnight at Mi Pedacito.
Day 3 .......... Maquenque
Visit a Great Green Macaw nest while exploring the reserve of Mi Pedacito. Have lunch and then travel to Maquenque Eco-Lodge and spend the afternoon searching for the macaw at this reserve. After dinner, participate in the tradition of roasting the Almendro seed over a campfire and singing the anthem of the Great Green Macaw. Overnight at Mi Pedacito.
